“Would You Waste a Kernel of Corn?”

We walked 20 minutes to minister in this Zapatista community. The Mexican Government is not in charge here which is a major reason why Poloh is one of the more poverty stricken areas in Chenalho, Chiapas.
After ministering, we were invited to eat in a small, smoke filled wooden hut. As we sat down at the table I noticed a turkey sitting on a nest full of eggs on one side of the room.
As these generous people are accustomed to do, they went all out and prepared chicken soup which is boiled in a pot above the open fire in the hut.
After eating a chicken breast (my favorite) and a few hand made tortillas I felt like I would burst at the seams from eating so much.
But the meal wasn’t over; They handed me a large corn on the cob.
I knew they were giving me their very best so I began eating the corn. Not wanting to offend my gracious hosts, I tried to eat everything but was so full I left a few scattered kernels on the cob.
That’s when I noticed one of the ladies was feeding the turkey a corn cob. So I politely passed my corn cob over to the lady expecting her to feed it to the turkey. To my surprise, she didn’t give it to the turkey. She began eating the kernels of corn that I’d left on the cob.
That’s when I realized that the need here is so great.
Whereas I, and maybe you, would leave a few kernels, this poverty stricken woman didn’t want to waste even one piece, not even on her turkey.
How can we help this poor woman?
She has very little material possessions – but at least she now has a church to go to that she values as the most important thing in her life .
You may never actually visit this new church but thanks to you, we’re able to.

This is our mission field. We were the first missionaries to enter Poloh.
