When God Called Me to the Mission Field
Do you remember a moment when God clearly called you to do something?
One of the keys to fulfilling God’s purpose for your life is simply responding “yes” when you hear His voice.
While attending Bible college in 1985, the school offered a missions boot camp trip to Jalisco. It would be my very first time visiting a foreign country.
As we traveled through a small town, I noticed people doing everyday activities — working, shopping, laughing, and spending time together.
Yet something deeply troubled me.
As I looked at the people around me, my heart was drawn to them because their countenance seemed so empty. A question immediately began stirring inside of me:
Have these people ever heard the Good News of salvation and eternal life through Jesus Christ?
I asked the missionary leading the trip, Roger West, if there was a Christian church in the town.
He told me there was not.
At that moment, everything changed for me.
I suddenly realized that if no one brought the Gospel to these people, many could spend eternity separated from God without ever truly hearing about Christ.
Then The Bible immediately came to mind:
“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’” — Isaiah 6:8
In my heart, I responded:
“Here am I. Send me.”
That trip marked a turning point in my life.
God used that moment to deepen my burden for the lost and strengthen my calling to missions, evangelism, and disciple-making among those who had never heard the Gospel.
I made the life changing decision to become a full-time missionary.
I responded to God,
"I will go...I'm not only willing, but available"
Looking back, I realize that responding to God’s call often begins with one simple act of obedience.
Sometimes it starts with something small — a conversation, a step of faith, or a willingness to serve another person.
Whatever God is calling you to do, I encourage you to respond with an obedient “yes.”
When you do, you take an important step toward discovering God’s purpose for your life and living for something with eternal significance.
In January of 1989 I began full-time ministry as a missionary.
That decision would eventually lead me to Mexico, church planting, disciple-making, meeting Ana, and a lifelong journey of following God’s mission.
