What does it mean to be “lost”?
Have you wandered off and couldn’t find your way back?
Or drove around looking for a specific location for hours?
Men are notorious for never admitting (to their wives) they are lost…
Most men refuse to ask for directions when they get lost but after wasting a lot of time and finally listening to their wives they eventually get back on track.
We used to have to the find a roadmap or ask someone else for directions.
In this modern age things are a lot easier.
Nowadays we can ask Alexa, or Siri for advice. And since we have GPS on our mobile phones, we can also consult google maps to find our way home.
What does it mean to be “lost “spiritually?
Being lost spiritually means to be lost FOREVER.
Getting geographically lost is usually only temporary, but the Bible talks about a terrible eternal darkness and tragedy of being lost spiritually.
You and I are concerned about lost people but Jesus is even more concerned about them because in Luke 19:10 he says,
“For The Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
The saddest thing in all the world is what Jesus is talking about in this verse… to be a lost soul.
Sermon Central’s message entitled “What does it mean to be lost states, “Lost ” may be the darkest, distressing word in the human language”.
“For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish – but have everlasting life!”
John 3:16
According to the Bible to be spiritually lost means:
- to perish forever
- eternal damnation
- to be outside of or separated from Jesus Christ
- someone who has never made Jesus Christ their Lord and Saviour
- Someone who doesn’t follow, listen to or obey Christ.
If a person dies without Jesus as their Savior, then according to the Bible they “Perish” – They are eternally lost!
Good News For Lost people
What should you do if you’re spiritually lost?
If you’re lost, get directions.
God has given us a roadmap called His Bible. You can even find it on your mobile device. I use YouVersion.
The Bible talks about how God rejoices more over one sinner who repents than someone who has found a lost coin or lost sheep.
In Luke 15 Jesus tells of a son who wandered off but when he came to his senses and returned to his father, Christ said,
“We have to celebrate and be glad, For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’
In Luke 19 Zacchaeus was a lost man who repented of his sins, joyfully received Christ and was changed. Jesus gave him direction and belonging when he said,
“Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
The good news is Jesus came to save all that is lost. Especially stubborn men who never ask for directions.
